Public Safety Sub Committee

The Public Safety Sub Committee has worked with the Council and other
agencies since June 01. They focus on issues of safety for older people and
quite often the Public at large. The Sub committee works closely with the Police
and Fire service to look at issues and find solutions to problems. They raise
issues of concern passed to them from the main forum. They work with relevant
departments within the City Council and look at issues around road Safety
including evaluating and reporting on pedestrian crossings and traffic problems.
Members of the committee attend the Crime Reduction Panel and information is exchanged between the Panel and the Forum through this Mechanism. Issues raised that have been successfully dealt with through the work of the Sub Committee include the Pedestrianisation of Queen Street, this matter was raised with the relevant council department and has now been implemented. The 20 MPH speed Limit introduced was raised through this Sub Committee and supported by the Forum.
They perform a function in relation to evaluating Pedestrian crossings and giving the results to the council to act upon. The Sub Committee is given Safety Information and has a function to feed that back to their peers.
One of the issues that was dealt with is the problems being caused by Alcohol related crime and disorder in the City. The Sub Committee held discussions with the City Council and Magistrates to try and work out a solution to these problems. There is now an alcohol restriction within the City centre.
The Sub Committee has successfully campaigned with the Police Service to provide a dedicated Older persons officer. The Police service have only recently provided a dedicated Vulnerable Persons officer but it shows that by opening discussions with agencies solutions can be found and worked out in partnership.
